The Course of General Chemistry:

a. Atomic structure:

Valency, type of chemical bonds, Born-Haber cycle for ionic compounds, Structural priciple of solids, packing of atoms in solids, face-centered, body centered and hexagonal packing, space lattice, unit cells, radius ratio. Types of ionic structures such as SnS, NaCl, CsCl, CaF₂ and Cdl₂. Covalent and coordinate bonds. Polar and non polar bonds. Valence bonds and molecular orbital theory for diatomic molecules.

d.Molecular Structure: The simple electron pair repulsion theory. Hybridization of s, p, d orbitals. Bond length and bond angles. Shapes of molecules of non-transition elements. Comparison of electron-pair repulsion theory with hybrid bond orbital theory.

e. Basic Concepts of Organic Chemistry:

(i) Classification of organic compounds on the basis of functional groups. Review of nomenclature based on IUPAC system. Types of reactions: substitution, elimination, addition, condensation, free radical, and polymerization reactions. Reaction mechanism and reaction intermediates.

(ii) Origin and evolution of biomolecules. Nature of carbohydrates, amino acids proteins and lipids, and their importance in the living systems.

f. Theories of Acids and Bases:

Strong acid-strong base and weak acid-weak base neutralization curves pH, buffers and indicators.

g. Environmental Chemistry:

Environmental segments. Radiation balance of earth. Chemical species and particulates present in the atmosphere. Reactions in atmosphere, reactions involving oxides of nitrogen. Formation and depletion of ozone in the stratosphere. Hazardous waste, radioactive wastes toxic chemicals andthe relevant chemical and biological processes.

Statistical Analysis of weighing, prepartion of buffer solutions of different pH(4.0, 7.0, 9.0), prepartion and standardization of EDTA solution, the colorimetric determination of ozone of Air, Semi micro analysis of mixtures containing four radicals (two acidic and two basic) including similar radicals, e.g. Br^-, I^-.NO₂^-,NO₃^-,CO₃^-,HCO₃^-, interfering radicals, e.g. PO₄^3- and C₂O₄^2-.
